Hungarian tax and customs enforcement actions

Overview

The Hungarian National Tax and Customs Administration (NAV) has conducted several high-profile investigations involving financial crimes and illegal goods.

In one instance, NAV officials intercepted nearly 1,800 counterfeit luxury sunglasses and rejected a bribery attempt by the driver. In a separate enforcement action, an individual was penalized 235 million forints for real estate tax evasion involving fraudulent renovation invoices, resulting in the seizure of multiple properties and vehicles.

Additionally, NAV has concluded a major investigation into the alleged money laundering of assets worth over 27 billion forints. The case began in March when the Counter Terrorism Centre (TEK) intercepted two armored vehicles on the M0 motorway. The shipment, which was traveling from Raiffeisen Bank International AG in Austria to JSC Oschadbank in Ukraine, contained 40 million dollars, 35 million euros, and 9 kilograms of gold. Seven Ukrainian citizens were detained during the operation and subsequently expelled from Hungary.

NAV officially closed the criminal investigation after documentation from Austrian authorities and the involved banks clarified the origin of the assets. Raiffeisen Bank International AG provided evidence verifying the origin of the currency and precious metals, confirming that JSC Oschadbank had completed the payment. The investigation concluded that the assets did not originate from criminal activity and no other crimes were identified.
