Hungary's New Asset Recovery Office Faces Legal Scrutiny

The Hungarian President signed a decree establishing the Magyar Nemzeti Vagyonvédelmi és Visszaszerzési Hivatal (National Asset Protection and Recovery Office). The agency is tasked with reclaiming assets obtained through fraud, embezzlement or other illegal means and will employ three new tools: risk assessment, asset examination and asset supervision. While the office can initiate civil actions, court review remains available for any supervisory measures.

Lawyers and commentators note that the body is intended to restore public wealth rather than replace criminal prosecution, drawing parallels with Romania's anti‑corruption prosecutor. Critics warn that the office could be used for political purposes and stress the need to keep asset‑tax policies separate from recovery efforts.
