The governing Tisza parliamentary group has asked the Hungarian National Assembly to hold an extraordinary session on Tuesday, 11 August 2026 to elect a new President of the Republic. The move follows the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law that ended former President Tamás Sulyok’s mandate at midnight on 20 July 2026, with Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer temporarily exercising presidential duties. Under the constitution, the parliament must choose a successor within 30 days of the vacancy.

Candidate nominations must be supported in writing by at least one‑fifth of the 199 MPs (40 members) and be submitted by 10 a.m. on the Monday before the vote. No official nomination has been filed yet. On 19 July, 16 prominent figures urged the Speaker to invite chess champion Judit Polgár, who was subsequently offered the post by Prime Minister Péter Magyar and declined.

The Tisza group will meet on Saturday to decide which candidate it will put forward. Opposition parties, notably Fidesz, have called the election illegitimate and announced a boycott. The election will be decided by a secret two‑thirds‑majority vote; if the first round fails, a runoff between the two leading candidates will be held without the super‑majority requirement.
