Hungary's PM Peter Magyar pushes constitutional vote to oust President Tamás Šujok
Prime Minister Péter Magyar has submitted a constitutional amendment to the Hungarian parliament that would terminate President Tamás Šujok’s term early. With the ruling party’s two‑thirds majority, a vote could be held as soon as next week, and if passed a new president would be chosen in the summer.
Šujok has refused to resign, calling the move a threat to democracy. Opposition leader Viktor Orban’s Fidesz party has announced protests in support of the president, accusing the government of overstepping constitutional limits. The European Commission is monitoring the process, and the Venice Commission’s assessment is still pending.
The amendment also proposes broader reforms, including setting a 70‑year retirement age for constitutional judges and limiting parliamentary mandates to 12 years.
