Hungary's press freedom under fire as new media law sparks criticism

Hungarian officials have warned that the recent media legislation threatens press freedom and the rule of law. In a public statement, Navrácsics Tibor said, “Ma Magyarországon minden és mindenki eltüntethető, ami vagy aki bármilyen formában is a jobboldalhoz köthető” (Today in Hungary everything and everyone linked to the right can be eliminated). Critics argue that the law effectively ends press freedom, as reported by Hungarian media outlets.

Opposition commentator Skrabski Fruzsina expressed personal insecurity, stating, “Nem érzem jogbiztonságban magam!” (I do not feel legal security). She highlighted risks of arbitrary removal of officials, lack of legal certainty, and the perception that the government places itself above the law. Both pieces reflect growing concerns over democratic standards in Hungary.
