Hungary's Tisza Party describes ideal candidate for next president

On July 18, former President Sulyok Tamás announced he had signed a constitutional amendment that will end his term on July 20, 2026. Prime Minister Viktor Orbán and politician Magyar Péter reacted to the news. Shortly after, Orbán shared the Tisza Party’s view on the qualities of the next head of state, stating that the ideal president should be free of any party‑political background and serve solely to unite the nation.

The party proposes an open nomination process that would involve parties, civil society organisations and private citizens submitting suggestions for candidates. It calls for a broad public consultation to identify values and trustworthy figures, with the final selection still conducted within parliamentary procedures: proposals would be discussed with parliamentary faction leaders and the parliament would make the definitive decision.
