Hungary's Tisza Party narrows presidential field to three candidates
Prime Minister Péter Magyar announced that the Tisza Party will put forward three names for the Hungarian presidency. The party’s leadership said a lengthy consultation yielded about ten viable candidates, and that “there are no surprises” among the three finalists. The National Assembly is scheduled to elect the new president on Tuesday, 11 August.
The vacancy arose after President Tamás Sulyok was removed under the 17th amendment to the Fundamental Law. Speaker Ágnes Forsthoffer has been exercising presidential powers since that removal. Earlier, the party had offered the post to chess grandmaster Judit Polgár, who declined, saying she did not feel prepared for the historic responsibility.
Among the individuals discussed publicly are lawyer Botond Fülöp, historian Ignác Romsics and former Supreme Court president András Baka, who has been presented as a temporary candidate. Magyar emphasized that anyone following recent developments would already know the situation.
