Hunter kills attacking bear near Kremnica, Slovakia; officials warn of roaming cub

On 21 June 2026 a hunter in the Grobňa area of Kremnica district, Slovakia, used a legally owned firearm in self‑defence after a female bear, estimated to be about seven years old, approached him near a tourist trail. The animal was accompanied by a cub born that year.

The State Nature Protection of the Slovak Republic dispatched a response team that monitored the site, collected biological samples and set up camera traps for ongoing observation. The cub could not be located.

Authorities have urged residents and visitors in the Krahule, Kremnica and surrounding forested areas to exercise heightened caution, stay on marked paths, avoid dense vegetation and report any bear sightings, especially of the cub, to the emergency line 112.
