Hunter Region's Former Coal Mine Sites to Become Industrial Hubs Creating Over 7,000 Jobs

The New South Wales and federal governments have unveiled draft master plans to rezone the Mt Arthur Coal Mine near Muswellbrook and the Macquarie Coal Complex at West Wallsend into multi‑industry precincts. The proposals aim to attract renewable‑energy, advanced‑manufacturing, defence, warehousing and other sectors, adding more than 7,000 jobs – roughly 5,900 jobs in an early‑activation phase and up to 1,130 permanent positions at the Macquarie site. The plans are part of a pilot post‑mining land‑use trial, with over 950 hectares identified for early development out of a total 5,400 hectares. Minister for Planning Paul Scully, Minister for the Hunter Yasmin Catley and federal Industry Minister Tim Ayres highlighted the region’s skilled workforce, existing rail, road and power infrastructure as key advantages. BHP has pledged to cease mining at Mt Arthur by 2030, prompting the transition. Alongside the redevelopment, a $381 million Muswellbrook bypass is progressing, funded by federal ($304.8 m) and state ($76.2 m) governments, expected to divert 2,500 heavy vehicles daily and support the regional economy.

Public exhibition of the master plans and rezoning proposals is now open, with local mayors Jeff Drayton (Muswellbrook) and Adam Shultz (Lake Macquarie) endorsing the initiatives as essential for the community’s future.
