Hunter rescued after serious leg injury northeast of Kitimat
A hunter suffering from a serious leg injury was airlifted to safety from the mountains northeast of Kitimat following a joint emergency response. The operation involved Kitimat Ground Search and Rescue (KSAR), the Kitimat Fire Department, and the BC Ambulance Service.
At approximately 2 p.m. on September 5, KSAR was tasked by the BC Ambulance Service. Eight search and rescue members and two paramedics responded to the scene via helicopter. After providing medical treatment, the team evacuated the patient to the Kitimat Airpark command centre, from where the hunter was transported to Kitimat General Hospital.
Search manager Kelly Marsh noted that the mission was a successful example of a unified command between organizations operating under different protocols. Marsh also observed that KSAR has seen an increase in activity this year, having handled nine tasks compared to a typical annual average of six or seven.
