Mountain rescue operations near Kitimat
Overview
In mid-August, a hunter located approximately 16 km from Kitamaat Village was airlifted from a remote mountainous area following an injury. The rescue was triggered by an SOS alert from an inReach satellite communication device. Due to the temporary closure of the emergency department at Kitimat General Hospital, the patient was flown to Terrace for treatment.
In early September, another hunter sustained a serious leg injury in the mountains northeast of Kitimat. This rescue involved a joint operation between Kitimat Ground Search and Rescue (KGSAR), the Kitimat Fire Department, and the BC Ambulance Service. The patient was evacuated via helicopter to the Kitimat Airpark command centre and subsequently transported to Kitimat General Hospital.
KGSAR officials noted that the agency has experienced an increase in activity this year, handling nine tasks compared to a typical annual average of six or seven.
