Public submissions for the Hunter Valley Operations Continuation Project are closing in a few days, with miners and supporters manning a stand in Singleton Square to solicit backing. The project, a joint venture between mining companies Yancoal and Glencore, seeks approval to extract about 716 million tonnes of coal from two sites – HVO North and HVO South – extending operations until 2045 and 2042 respectively. Singleton and Maitland councils have unanimously voted to support the proposal, while Muswellbrook mayor Jeff Drayton urged the Independent Planning Commission to grant approval. Upper Hunter MP Dave Layzell warned that closing the mine could trigger an “economic armageddon” for the area. Opponents argue the project would significantly increase global emissions, raising environmental concerns as the debate continues.
