Hunter Valley faces economic transition as coal mining ends

The Hunter region is facing a significant economic shift as coal mining comes to an end. This transition involves the potential loss of over 12,500 jobs and the challenge of rehabilitating approximately 30,000 hectares of open-cut mines.

Proposed transition plans focus on utilizing mine voids and redundant power station sites, which offer advantages such as heavy rail access, high-voltage transmission lines, and large water storage. Potential future uses include solar panel manufacturing, pumped-hydro schemes, battery storage, and data centers.

There are concerns regarding whether these new industries will provide sufficient high-quality, enduring employment for the middle and upper Hunter districts. Without successful investment, there is a risk that these non-metropolitan regions could face long-term economic and demographic decline.
