Hunter Valley Operations faces debate over coal mining future
The Hunter Valley Operations (HVO) continuation project is facing significant debate regarding its economic impact and the future of coal mining in the region. Supporters of the project note that more than 70 per cent of submissions to the Independent Planning Commission have supported the proposal.
Local backing for the project includes various MPs, councils, business chambers, and community organisations. Proponents argue that the project is essential for the livelihoods of approximately 1,500 employees and the broader Hunter community, which relies heavily on mining, manufacturing, and agriculture.
