Hunters rescue young bear trapped in pit near Mostar

Two hunters from the Unified Hunting Organization ‘Lovac Mostar 1922’ rescued a young bear that had fallen into a deep, inaccessible pit near Mostar. The incident occurred in the ‘Prenj – Velež’ hunting grounds while the hunters were inspecting a watering hole.

Because the pit featured steep and slippery rocks, the bear was unable to climb out on its own. The hunters lowered a rope into the hole, and after several attempts, the bear gripped the rope with its teeth. With the assistance of the hunters, the animal was able to pull itself to the surface and return to its natural habitat.

The rescue was noted as being particularly dangerous due to the strength of the young bear and the risk of an aggressive mother bear appearing to protect her cub. Local officials noted that the presence of young bears in the area is a positive sign for the local population, which is estimated to include approximately 11 bears near Mostar and around 30 in the Herzegovina-Neretva Canton.
