Huntington Beach man in wheelchair killed in traffic collision

A 74-year-old man from Westminster died following a traffic collision in Huntington Beach on Tuesday afternoon. The incident occurred around 2 p.m. near the intersection of Skylab Road and Able Lane.

According to the Huntington Beach Police Department, the man was traveling southbound in a motorized wheelchair across Skylab Road when he was struck by a white Honda Civic traveling eastbound. Emergency responders found the man unconscious in the roadway; he was transported to a local hospital where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The driver of the vehicle, a 45-year-old man from Los Angeles, was uninjured and remained at the scene to cooperate with investigators. Police stated that impairment does not appear to have been a factor for the driver, though it remains unknown if impairment played a role for the victim. The investigation is being conducted by the department’s Multidisciplinary Accident Investigation Team.
