Hurricane Fausto strengthens to Category 2, threatens Hawaii and U.S. West Coast

The National Hurricane Center reported that Hurricane Fausto has intensified into a Category 2 storm with maximum sustained winds of 100‑105 mph. The cyclone is located far east of the Hawaiian Islands, moving west at about 14‑16 mph, and is expected to approach Hawaii early to mid‑next week. Forecasters anticipate the storm will gradually weaken over cooler waters and stronger wind shear before reaching the islands, potentially bringing heavy rain and high surf.

Swells generated by Fausto are already affecting the Pacific Coast of the United States. The National Weather Service issued a Beach Hazards Statement for northern and central California beaches, warning of 10‑foot breaking waves, strong rip currents and sneaker (or “shooter”) waves from Saturday through Tuesday. Similar surf and rip‑current threats are forecast for southern California. Hawaii may see advisory‑level surf on east‑facing shores later this weekend, while inland rainfall chances remain uncertain. Residents in both regions are advised to stay out of the water when hazardous conditions are present and to monitor updates.
