Hurricane Lala lashes Hawaii with flooding and power outages

Hurricane Lala, which reached Category 1 strength, has lashed the Hawaiian Islands with heavy rainfall, high winds, and flooding. While the eye of the storm passed just south of the Big Island without making a direct landfall, the archipelago has experienced significant disruption.

At least one person died in a vehicle accident in the South Point area of the Big Island. The storm caused widespread power outages, leaving over 200,000 customers without electricity, including nearly two-thirds of the Big Island. In the Kau district, floodwaters and mudslides reportedly swept approximately 100 homes off their foundations.

Transportation has been heavily impacted, with 190 flights postponed and at least 106 flights canceled in Honolulu and Hilo. The Honolulu Fire Department reported over 600 weather-related calls, including numerous reports of downed trees and damaged roofs. Tropical storm warnings remain in effect for several islands, including Maui, Oahu, and Kauai, as the system begins to move away from the region.
