Hawaii Big Island braces for Tropical Storm Lala to strengthen into hurricane
Tropical Storm Lala is projected to strengthen into a hurricane before approaching Hawaii’s Big Island this weekend. If the storm makes landfall, it would mark the first hurricane landfall on the island since 1871.
Meteorologists warn of destructive flooding, high winds, and heavy surf. Some areas of the Big Island could receive up to 25 inches of rain. A hurricane warning is currently in effect for the Big Island, while Maui County is under a tropical storm warning. Oʻahu and Kauaʻi are under tropical storm watches.
Governor Josh Green has declared a state of emergency to facilitate debris removal and infrastructure protection. Local authorities have opened public shelters across all districts in Hawaiʻi County and are urging residents to complete all storm preparations immediately.
