Hurricane Marie causes heavy rain in Mexico and coastal flooding in Southern California
Hurricane Marie has strengthened to a category 2 storm as it moves northwest, away from the Mexican coast. While the core of the hurricane is distant, its circulation continues to impact both Mexico and the United States.
In Mexico, the storm is causing heavy rainfall and high surf. Baja California Sur and Baja California are experiencing waves between two and three meters. Authorities in Los Cabos have reported road damage and suspended classes, while ports remain closed. The Mexican monsoon is also expected to bring intense rains to Sinaloa and other northwestern regions.
In the United States, the remnants of Hurricane Marie have triggered dangerous surf and coastal flooding in Southern California. Wave heights reached 10 feet at Zuma Beach, and heavy rip tides have prompted numerous ocean rescues. In Orange County, Metrolink suspended rail service between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside due to track damage and high tides. Coastal flooding was also reported in Seal Beach, leading to the closure of beachfront parking lots.
