Hurricane Marie impact in Baja California Sur and US West

Overview

Tropical Storm Marie initially caused significant flooding and destruction in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, with winds reaching 75 mph. Local businesses, including the Cabo Wabo club, reported the situation as a “disaster” as the storm impacted buildings and services.

The storm subsequently intensified into a Category 2 hurricane with sustained winds of approximately 155 km/h. Although the eye moved west-northwest away from the mainland, its circulation caused heavy rainfall and overflowing arroyos across the Baja California Peninsula. In Cabo San Lucas, the Lagunitas stream overflowed, sweeping away vehicles.

In response, authorities suspended educational activities in Los Cabos and Comondú and closed several ports to small vessels. The Mexican Army and National Guard activated Plan DN-III-E to assist populations and clear debris. Cleanup operations have commenced to remove mud and debris from roads, with forecasts suggesting the hurricane will gradually weaken over the weekend.

As the hurricane maintains Category 2 strength while moving northwest, its circulation continues to impact both Mexico and the United States. In Mexico, Baja California Sur and Baja California are experiencing waves between two and three meters, while a Mexican monsoon is expected to bring intense rains to Sinaloa and other northwestern regions.

In the United States, the remnants of Marie have triggered dangerous surf and coastal flooding in Southern California. Wave heights reached 10 feet at Zuma Beach, and heavy rip tides have prompted numerous ocean rescues. In Orange County, Metrolink suspended rail service between Laguna Niguel/Mission Viejo and Oceanside due to track damage and high tides. Coastal flooding also led to the closure of beachfront parking lots in Seal Beach.
