Hurricane Polo threatens Baja California Sur and Mexican coast
Hurricane Polo, a powerful cyclone that recently reached Category 5 strength, is currently a Category 4 storm with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph. The system is moving west-northwest in the Pacific Ocean, positioned approximately 195 miles southwest of Zihuatanejo and 150 miles south of Manzanillo.
While the eye of the storm is expected to remain offshore, its outer bands are causing significant impacts across Mexico. Heavy rainfall, potential flooding, and landslides are expected in Guerrero, Michoacán, Colima, Jalisco, and Nayarit. In response, Mexican authorities have closed several Pacific ports and deployed 1,700 soldiers in Michoacán for rescue and preventive support. The storm is projected to turn toward the north, with a potential landfall in central Baja California Sur expected between Sunday night and Monday morning. Forecasters warn that these swells, combined with high tides of up to 7 feet on Monday and Tuesday, could lead to coastal flooding, beach erosion, and dangerous surf conditions in areas such as Malibu and Long Beach.
