Greece fire forces evacuation of three Solun suburbs, suspect arrested

A large blaze broke out Saturday night in the foothills near Solun, Greece’s second‑largest city. The fire quickly spread toward the Anthoupoli, Filothei and Galini suburbs, prompting authorities to send SMS alerts and evacuate residents. A facility housing 157 people with special needs was also evacuated, with around 120 mobile individuals relocated to a sports hall and the remainder placed in a psychiatric hospital.

Greek fire crews deployed about 115 firefighters, 38 fire engines and volunteer support, while aerial units provided limited assistance before darkness fell. Strong winds hampered containment efforts and explosions from burning materials were heard in nearby businesses, which sustained damage.

Police detained a 76‑year‑old man on suspicion of deliberately starting the fire; officials said he appeared intoxicated. The blaze has been largely contained, but crews remain on standby as the situation evolves.
