Catholic cemetery near Travnik vandalized in Bosnia
A Catholic cemetery in Slimena, near Travnik in central Bosnia, was vandalized on Wednesday, August 12, resulting in the destruction of several tombstones. Police reported that the perpetrator used physical force to topple five granite slabs. Following an investigation, authorities detained a 38-year-old man, identified by the initials D. G., who is known for previous violent behavior.
The incident has drawn sharp condemnation from political organizations, including the local branches of HDZ BiH and HDZ 1990, who described the act as an unacceptable attack on civilizational and moral values. The prosecutor has classified the event as a potential violation of the peace of the deceased.
In a gesture of solidarity, Jasmin Zahirović, owner of the Jasko stonemasonry company from Vitez, announced that his workers would repair the damaged monuments free of charge. This act of restoration was welcomed by the local community and the cemetery's local committee as a sign of coexistence.
