Hyderabad Man Commits Suicide Over SIR Voter Roll Fears

Two men in Hyderabad died by suicide amid anxiety about the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) voter‑verification drive in Telangana. Shaik Mujeeb, a resident of Borabanda, reportedly spent about ₹1.5 million trying to correct discrepancies in his documents before hanging himself at home. Another resident, 40‑year‑old cab driver Sheikh Mujbil Rehman, also from Borabanda, feared that inconsistencies could lead to his name being removed from the electoral roll and his children being classified as foreigners. He too spent roughly ₹1.5 million on document corrections and took his own life early on June 28.

The SIR exercise, launched on June 25, involves door‑to‑door verification by Booth Level Officers and Agents, covering about 30 % of Telangana’s population so far. Authorities and political parties have offered assistance, but reports suggest the process is generating fear and financial strain among some residents.
