India reports various cases of cyber extortion, assault, and corruption
Various criminal incidents involving extortion, sexual assault, and corruption have been reported across India.
In Mumbai, a court discharged a man in the Bulli Bai case due to insufficient evidence linking him to the creation or circulation of the app. In Gujarat, nine individuals were arrested following the gang-rape and assault of a woman during a purported purification ritual.
Cybercrime remains a significant issue, with a 26-year-old arrested in Hyderabad for extorting Rs 38 lakh from a retiree through fake social media profiles and blackmail. Similarly, a 25-year-old in Ahmedabad lost Rs 49 lakh to a sophisticated scheme involving fake video calls and impersonation of law enforcement. In Malappuram, a man was arrested for assaulting a transgender woman and extorting money using intimate images.
Instances of misconduct by officials were also noted. A Telangana Special Police constable was booked for allegedly sexually assaulting a woman and extorting Rs 1.30 lakh by threatening to leak videos. Additionally, the Ranga Reddy District Medical and Health Officer was sent to judicial custody following an arrest by the Anti-Corruption Bureau for an alleged Rs 1 lakh bribe involving a physiotherapy center license.
