Hyderabad Water Board mandates 20% resource reduction

The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has ordered all its offices to reduce water and electricity consumption by at least 20%. Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy issued these directives in response to concerns regarding potential resource stress caused by El Niño.

New protocols include maintaining air conditioner temperatures at 25 degrees Celsius and prohibiting AC usage after 5 pm, except for essential maintenance authorized by senior officials. To minimize waste, the board has instructed staff to collect water discharged from air conditioning units for use in gardening and cleaning. Additionally, officials must identify and repair leaks in pipelines, taps, and storage tanks, and ensure electrical equipment is switched off when not in use.

In a separate initiative to preserve drinking water, the HMWSSB will implement online monitoring of treated water quality at green water filling stations. The board aims to prevent wastage by ensuring excess water from tanker operations is diverted back into reservoirs and by installing controls to prevent tankers from being filled beyond their designated capacities. Treated water is to be increasingly redirected toward non-potable uses such as industrial activities, construction, and road cleaning.
