Water supply challenges in Hyderabad

Overview

Hyderabad continues to face significant water supply challenges driven by declining groundwater levels and a 17 percent decrease in rainfall attributed to the El Niño effect. While previous efforts focused on maintenance and securing additional supply through the Krishna River and Mission Bhagiratha, new data indicates a worsening crisis across the state. As of late October 2026, reservoir levels in the Krishna basin show a 71 percent deficit, with only 78.5 TMCft available against a 270 TMCft capacity. The Godavari basin also reports a 34 percent deficit. The Singur reservoir remains critically low, leading to projections that approximately three lakh water connections in Hyderabad could face shortages by December in areas dependent on the Singur and Manjeera reservoirs.

In response to intensifying resource stress, the Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWSSB) has mandated a 20 percent reduction in water and electricity consumption across all its offices. Managing Director K. Ashok Reddy issued directives including maintaining air conditioner temperatures at 25 degrees Celsius and prohibiting AC usage after 5 pm, except for authorized essential maintenance. To minimize waste, staff must collect water discharged from air conditioning units for gardening and cleaning.

Further conservation efforts include online monitoring of treated water quality at green water filling stations and implementing controls to prevent tankers from being filled beyond capacity. The HMWSSB aims to divert excess tanker water back into reservoirs and increasingly redirect treated water toward non-potable uses such as industrial activities, construction, and road cleaning.
