HYDRAA completes restoration of six Hyderabad lakes

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has completed the restoration of six lakes in Hyderabad and has initiated work on 14 additional water bodies. The agency is focusing on reclaiming encroached areas, removing heavy silt accumulation, and improving the city’s overall flood resilience.

Commissioner AV Ranganath stated that protecting water resources is vital for environmental sustainability. Data from the National Remote Sensing Centre indicates that 61 per cent of Hyderabad’s lakes have disappeared, while remaining bodies often suffer from encroachment and silt levels reaching five to six metres. Successful interventions, such as the restoration of Bathukamma Kunta, have already helped mitigate flooding in surrounding areas.
