HYDRAA civic management and lake restoration activities

Overview

The Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) has expanded its digital and administrative engagement with the public. The agency launched an official web portal designed to centralize civic services and disaster management information, allowing residents to access critical data such as lake buffer-zone regulations, live rainfall maps, and weather forecasts. The platform provides direct access to the HMDA Lakes Portal for verifying Full Tank Levels (FTL) and facilitates online applications for fire safety No Objection Certificates (NOCs).

Through its Prajavani grievance sessions, HYDRAA continues to address community complaints regarding illegal boundary walls, road encroachments, and drainage issues. Parallel to grievance redressal, the agency has shifted focus toward large-scale environmental restoration and enforcement. Commissioner AV Ranganath noted that protecting water resources is vital for sustainability, citing data from the National Remote Sensing Centre that 61 per cent of Hyderabad’s lakes have disappeared.

HYDRAA has completed the restoration of six lakes and initiated work on 14 additional water bodies to improve flood resilience. A major ₹35 crore restoration project for Kapra Lake is underway, with approximately 60% of the work completed. This project includes desilting, deepening the lake for groundwater recharge, and improving inlet/outlet systems. Notably, local farmers have voluntarily consented to hand over 70 acres of land within the lake’s FTL boundaries to support the restoration of this vital wetland.

Enforcement efforts have also targeted illegal groundwater extraction. Using drone-assisted surveillance, HYDRAA and partner agencies dismantled networks near Sunnam Cheruvu and Thammidikunta lakes, removing 31 unauthorised borewells. Investigations revealed sophisticated operations where water was extracted from residential premises via concealed pipelines and sold via commercial tankers.
