Hydroelectric reservoirs in Colombia and Paraguay monitor water levels

In Colombia, the Hidroituango reservoir in Antioquia has reached a level of 416 meters, placing it four meters below its target storage level of 420 meters. Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) aims to reach this goal by late October or November 2026 to prepare for the potential intensification of the El Niño phenomenon. Reaching the target would provide approximately 400 million cubic meters of additional water, equivalent to 187 gigawatt-hours of stored energy. The National Environmental Licensing Authority (ANLA) has granted temporary flexibility in reservoir operation rules to facilitate this gradual increase.

In Paraguay, the Yacyretá Binational Entity reported a reservoir level of 82.54 meters as of October 26, 2026, following a slight decrease from the previous day. The daily inflow is forecasted at 34,500 m3/s. Operational discharges include 9,300 m3/s through the main arm spillway and 10,300 m3/s through the Aña Cuá arm. Water levels at the Port of Ayolas and the Port of Ituzaingó are being monitored in relation to these hydrological trends.
