Water reservoir and scarcity trends in Colombia
Overview
In Colombia, water availability has shown significant regional variation. In Cundinamarca, while the Chingaza system maintained 94.6% capacity to stabilize Bogotá, non-regulated basins reliant on rainfall dropped below 10% capacity due to the El Niño phenomenon. This prompted 107 out of 116 municipalities to submit contingency plans to manage severe precipitation shortages.
By late October 2026, focus shifted to hydroelectric stability. The Hidroituango reservoir in Antioquia reached 416 meters, remaining four meters below its 420-meter target. Empresas Públicas de Medellín (EPM) sought to reach this level by late 2026 to prepare for the potential intensification of El Niño, a move supported by temporary operational flexibility granted by the National Environmental Licensing Authority (ANLA).
