Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter advances sustainable tech in Germany

A session on 18 September 2026 examined the potential and challenges of using hydrogen technology in galvanic (surface) engineering, highlighting the high cost of production and the need for cheaper, highly active electrocatalysts. Fraunhofer IPA presented results from the IREKA project, which developed methods to reduce the use of costly iridium in PEM electrolyzer anodes without sacrificing performance.

On 5 May 2025, the Niedersachsen representation in Berlin hosted a transformation dialogue titled “Da steckt Zukunft drin”. The event featured a presentation of the Hydrogen Campus Salzgitter, a nonprofit aiming to promote hydrogen technologies. Fraunhofer IST explained its scientific support for the campus, emphasizing the role of renewable energy, climate‑neutral industry, and best‑practice examples from the region.
