University of Évora leads renewable hydrogen project in Portugal
The H2tALENT project, coordinated by the University of Évora, aims to establish a ‘hydrogen valley’ in the Alentejo region of Portugal. Running from 2024 to 2030, the initiative involves 29 partners from seven countries and a total budget of nine million euros.
The project seeks to demonstrate the practical applications of renewable hydrogen across the entire value chain, from production to final use. Key testing sites include Sines, where a 15-megawatt electrolyzer unit is planned for production; Évora, focusing on hydrogen use for heating buildings; Alandroal, targeting mobility solutions for municipal fleets; and Culatra Island, which will test renewable energy communities and smart grids.
By utilizing excess solar energy to produce hydrogen, the project aims to store energy for periods of high demand, integrating these solutions into local transport, buildings, and energy systems.
