Renewable hydrogen project developments
Overview
Renewable hydrogen initiatives are expanding through industrial digitalization and regional pilot projects in Portugal and Brazil.
In Portugal, Siemens and Galp Energia are collaborating to digitalize the 100 MW GalpH2Park in Sines. By deploying a Hydrogen Performance Suite, the project aims to optimize production through a predictive digital twin, targeting an annual output of 15,000 tons of renewable hydrogen.
Regional efforts are centered on the H2tALENT project, coordinated by the University of Évora. Running from 2024 to 2030 with a nine million euro budget, the initiative involves 29 partners from seven countries to establish a ‘hydrogen valley’ in the Alentejo region. The project will demonstrate hydrogen applications across the value chain using excess solar energy. Key testing sites include a 15 MW production unit in Sines, building heating in Évora, municipal fleet mobility in Alandroal, and smart grids on Culatra Island.
Infrastructure in the Sines Industrial and Logistics Zone (ZILS) is also expanding. The CCDR Alentejo has issued installation titles for the MadoquaPower2X (MP2X) and MADOQUA NH3 projects. MP2X, a Project of National Interest valued at approximately 2.8 billion euros, aims to establish a 500 MW green hydrogen production unit, while MADOQUA NH3 will focus on producing green ammonia.
Additionally, Brazil is advancing maritime hydrogen research through the JAQ H2 project, which aims to test on-board hydrogen production from seawater using a 50-meter vessel scheduled for operations in late 2027.
