Hydrogen train testing begins on Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line

Dynamic acceptance tests for new hydrogen-powered trains have commenced on the Brescia-Iseo-Edolo railway line in Italy as part of the H2iseO project. The testing phase, which began during the night of September 15-16, aims to verify the functionality of onboard systems and infrastructure in preparation for commercial service scheduled to launch in 2027.

The initial testing phase involves the first seven trains produced by Alstom. Each train is required to travel at least 300 kilometers along the line, with the first unit undergoing an additional 2,000-kilometer test cycle. To avoid disrupting regular passenger services, these trials are conducted at night during scheduled service interruptions.

This initiative, supported by Lombardy Region and funded in part by the PNRR, seeks to provide a sustainable mobility model for this non-electrified line. Following the successful completion of these dynamic tests, the trains will enter an experimental service period to simulate various operational scenarios and complete the authorization process.
