Hydrogen train testing on Brescia-Iseo-Edolo line
Overview
The H2iseO project has commenced dynamic acceptance testing for new hydrogen-powered trains on the Brescia–Iseo–Edolo railway line in Italy. To prevent disruption to regular passenger services, these trials are being conducted during nighttime hours.
The testing phase involves the first seven trains produced by Alstom. Each unit is required to travel at least 300 kilometers, with the initial convoy scheduled for an additional 2,000-kilometer test cycle. Early testing included the Alstom HMU 214-004 train, which covered approximately 170 kilometers between Brescia and Iseo to verify onboard systems and hydrogen plants.
Supported by the Lombardy Region and funded by 84.5 million euros in PNRR resources, the project aims to establish a sustainable mobility model for this non-electrified line. Following the completion of these dynamic tests, the trains will enter an experimental service phase to simulate operational scenarios and fulfill authorization requirements ahead of a scheduled commercial launch in 2027.
