Hydrogen trains begin dynamic testing on Brescia–Iseo–Edolo line

Dynamic acceptance tests for hydrogen-powered trains have commenced on the Brescia–Iseo–Edolo railway line as part of the H2iseO project. The testing phase, conducted during nighttime hours to avoid disrupting regular service, aims to verify the functionality of onboard systems and hydrogen plants.

The first test run involved the Alstom HMU 214-004 train, covering approximately 170 kilometers between Brescia and Iseo. Over the coming weeks, the testing will involve the first seven Alstom-produced trains, with each unit expected to travel at least 300 km. The first convoy is scheduled for an additional 2,000 km test cycle.

Following these dynamic tests, the project will move into an experimental service phase to simulate all operational scenarios. This process is a requirement for the official authorization of the trains, which are slated to begin commercial service in 2027. The initiative is supported by the Lombardy Region and funded through 84.5 million euros in PNRR resources allocated for the purchase of seven hydrogen trains.
