Hypertension management and financial support in Poland
Hypertension affects approximately 11 million adults in Poland, including half of those aged 65 and older. Managing the condition requires adherence, which involves following a doctor-approved treatment plan, including medication, regular blood pressure monitoring, physical activity, and healthy lifestyle changes.
Adherence is a significant challenge; the World Health Organization and the World Heart Federation note that in developed countries, fewer than half of patients follow long-term treatment recommendations for chronic diseases. Common obstacles include forgetting medication, side effects, or the misconception that treatment can be stopped once blood pressure readings normalize.
Regarding financial support, a diagnosis of hypertension alone does not qualify a patient for state benefits in Poland. Financial assistance, such as the nursing allowance or the support benefit from the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), is determined by the degree of independence lost due to the disease or its complications, such as a stroke. Eligible individuals with the highest level of support needs may receive combined monthly payments totaling up to 4,568.84 PLN.
