Hypertension management and support in Poland

Overview

Hypertension affects approximately 11 million adults in Poland, including half of those aged 65 and older. Effective management requires adherence to doctor-approved treatment plans, which include medication, regular monitoring, physical activity, and lifestyle changes.

Adherence remains a significant challenge. The World Health Organization and the World Heart Federation have noted that in developed countries, fewer than half of patients follow long-term treatment recommendations for chronic diseases. Common obstacles include side effects, forgetting medication, or the misconception that treatment can be discontinued once blood pressure readings normalize.

In terms of state support, a hypertension diagnosis alone does not qualify a patient for benefits in Poland. Financial assistance, such as nursing allowances or support benefits from the Social Insurance Institution (ZUS), is determined by the degree of independence lost due to the disease or its complications, such as a stroke. Individuals with the highest level of support needs may receive combined monthly payments totaling up to 4,568.84 PLN.
