Høyre local branches protest central leadership over fuel tax increases
Local branches of the Norwegian Conservative Party (Høyre) are in open conflict with the central leadership over a decision to increase fuel taxes on September 1. At least 22 municipal chapters have joined a protest demanding that the previous tax cuts be maintained.
Regional chapters in Lofoten and Vesterålen, including Hadsel, Øksnes, Bø, Vågan, Lødingen, and Vestvågøy, have voiced strong opposition. Local leaders argue that rising fuel prices disproportionately affect rural areas where long distances and limited public transport make cars essential for both private citizens and industries such as agriculture, fishing, and transport.
Party leader Ine Eriksen Søreide and deputy leader Henrik Asheim have maintained the current stance. The leadership argues that permanent tax relief for individuals and businesses is a more effective tool than temporary fuel tax cuts, noting that oil prices have stabilized compared to earlier in the year.
