Hysata to build 50 MW electrolyser production line in NSW

Hysata, a hydrogen technology company spun out of the University of Wollongong, will establish a commercial-scale electrolyser manufacturing line at Port Kembla in New South Wales. The $98 million project is being funded through a $49 million grant from the Australian Renewable Energy Agency (ARENA) via the Future Made in Australia Innovation Fund, which Hysata will match with private capital.

The facility will initially produce up to 50 MW of capillary-fed electrolysers per year, with the capacity to scale to 200 MW through 24-hour operations. The 8,500 square metre site will also manufacture essential components locally, including membranes, anodes, and cathodes.

Hysata’s technology is designed to improve the efficiency of green hydrogen production, reportedly achieving 95% efficiency—approximately 20% higher than current technologies. This efficiency aims to reduce costs for hard-to-abate sectors such as steelmaking, fertiliser production, chemicals, shipping, and heavy transport. The project is expected to support a regional clean technology ecosystem, with Hysata forecasting annual spending of $20 million to $30 million with Australian suppliers.
