Hyundai and Kia recall 14 EVs, tell owners to park outside

Hyundai Motor and Kia announced a recall of 14 electric‑vehicle models after a battery‑cell defect was identified. The defect involves misaligned electrodes in high‑voltage cells supplied by SK On, which can cause an internal short circuit and present a fire risk both while parked and in motion.

The recall covers six 2023‑24 Hyundai Ioniq 5s, seven 2022‑24 Kia EV6s and one 2024 Kia EV9. Owners have been instructed to keep the vehicles in open areas away from buildings, limit charging to no more than 80 % of capacity, and refrain from indoor parking until repairs are completed. Kia will replace the affected battery packs; Hyundai has said a repair program will be announced. The recall was filed with the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and has been reported in Indonesia, Turkey and other markets.
