Hyundai Motor union reaches tentative wage deal after decade-high strike
The Hyundai Motor union in South Korea has reached a tentative agreement with management following its first full-scale strike in a decade. The strike, which involved approximately 40,000 workers on August 21, 2026, was triggered by stalled negotiations regarding wages, retirement age, and job security in the face of increasing automation.
The tentative deal includes a 100,000 won monthly base salary increase, performance bonuses, and welfare points. Additionally, the company has committed to hiring 500 new technical workers annually from 2026 through 2028. The agreement aims to avert further production disruptions at major facilities, such as the Ulsan plant, which has a massive annual capacity.
Union concerns centered heavily on the deployment of humanoid robots and artificial intelligence, which workers fear could replace human labor. The union had specifically demanded an increase in the mandatory retirement age from 60 and stronger protections against automation. Prior to the full strike, a series of partial walkouts since July had already disrupted the production of an estimated 55,200 vehicles, resulting in losses exceeding 2.3 trillion won.
