Overview

On 20 July, union members formally approved the strike authorization, emphasizing the demand for a role in decisions about automation and citing concerns that humanoid robots could threaten jobs despite Hyundai’s claim they will only handle repetitive and hazardous tasks. This marks the first major automotive labour conflict focused on humanoid robots such as Boston Dynamics’ Atlas, which Hyundai acquired in 2021 for about $880 million. Negotiations remain deadlocked over a bonus gap: Hyundai offers about 33‑35 million won per worker, while the union demands 70‑80 million won, a difference of around 40 million won per employee. Union demands also include a monthly base‑pay rise to 149,600 won, a profit‑share bonus equal to 30 % of last year’s net profit, an 800 % increase to the bonus pool, a fully‑salaried pay system to protect wages from AI‑driven automation, an extended retirement age to 65, additional staffing, and a guarantee that no Atlas humanoid robots will be installed without a labour‑management agreement. On 25 July, Hyundai Motor Group clarified that its plan to deploy Atlas at the Metaplant America EV factory in Georgia by 2028 is not tied to the Korean strike negotiations. The company said future robot deployments will be decided after dialogue with employees and local operational needs, while outlining a broader Physical AI vision that includes collaborations with NVIDIA, Waymo and Boston Dynamics.
