Hyundai Ioniq 3 expands in Europe while canceled in Australia
Hyundai is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the launch of the Ioniq 3, a compact electric hatchback. The vehicle, which utilizes the E-GMP platform, features a design philosophy termed ‘Aero Hatch’ and is produced in Izmit, Turkey. Depending on the battery configuration, the model offers a range of up to 497 km (WLTP) and includes advanced technology such as the Pleos Connect infotainment system based on Android Automotive OS.
The rollout strategy varies significantly by region. In Europe and the United Kingdom, the Ioniq 3 is being positioned as a highly competitive option, with UK prices starting as low as £18,495 after government grants. In Poland and Germany, the model is being marketed for its spaciousness and competitive leasing options.
However, Hyundai has officially canceled the planned launch of the Ioniq 3 in Australia. A spokesperson for Hyundai Australia stated that the business case was not viable due to high import costs associated with manufacturing in Turkey rather than South Korea. The company noted that the high price point would make it difficult to compete in a price-sensitive segment against rivals like the MG 4 and BYD Dolphin.
