Hyundai Engineering & Construction begins construction on Pohang AI data center

Hyundai Engineering & Construction has commenced construction on South Korea’s first dedicated AI data center in Pohang. The project, commissioned by AI Factory Pohang PFV, is located in the Gwangmyeong General Industrial Complex and features a power capacity of 40MW.

To meet an ambitious 16.5-month construction timeline, the company is utilizing a precast concrete (PC) method for the entire structure, including slabs, walls, and stairs. This approach is expected to reduce the framework construction period from approximately one year to just two months. The project also employs Pre-Construction Services (PCS) and Fast-Track methods to accelerate the schedule.

Unlike general-purpose data centers, this facility is a high-performance GPU-based center designed for real-time large-scale data analysis. It will feature a liquid cooling system—a first in Korea—to manage high-heat AI servers and is designed with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.25. The project developer, Neo AI Cloud, plans to build an expandable infrastructure capable of supporting next-generation GPUs, such as NVIDIA’s Vera Rubin, to provide GPU-as-a-Service and AI platform services.
