Hyundai evaluates future WRC strategy and 2029 regulations

Hyundai is evaluating its future involvement in the World Rally Championship (WRC) as it approaches significant regulatory changes. While it is confirmed that the manufacturer will not introduce a new car under the 2027 regulations, the company has not yet finalized its strategy for the intervening years.

Sport Director Andrew Wheatley stated that the team is considering several options, including focusing on the WRC2 category or competing for manufacturer titles with existing machinery. There has been speculation regarding a potential withdrawal as a factory team after this season, with a planned return in 2029 when new, more flexible engine regulations are introduced.

Wheatley emphasized the importance of maintaining technical expertise and competitiveness. He noted that a complete hiatus could be problematic for retaining experience, suggesting that any transition program must balance economic viability with the need for regular competition. Hyundai is currently working closely with the FIA and promoters to understand the landscape leading into the 2029 season.
