Hyundai WRC participation and driver uncertainty
Overview
Hyundai is evaluating its long-term strategy for the World Rally Championship (WRC) in response to upcoming regulatory changes. While the manufacturer has confirmed it will not develop a new car for the 2027 regulations, Sport Director Andrew Wheatley indicated the team is considering various paths, such as focusing on the WRC2 category or utilizing existing machinery to remain competitive. Wheatley emphasized that any transition must balance economic viability with the need to maintain technical expertise, noting that a complete hiatus could be problematic for retaining experience. There is speculation regarding a potential factory team hiatus before a planned return in 2029 under new engine regulations.
This uncertainty has impacted key personnel. Driver Adrien Fourmaux is weighing his professional future, exploring options including a return to M-Sport to drive a Ford. Fourmaux stated, “I am taking time to make a decision,” with the goal of returning to a Rally1 car as soon as possible.
Co-driver Martijn Wydaeghe has also expressed concern regarding his future following the conclusion of the season in Sardinia. As Hyundai shifts focus toward the development of the i20 N Rally2—with undecided plans regarding a WRC kit for the top category—Wydaeghe noted he currently has no scheduled work. He stated, “I am increasingly [worried]... I have tried to keep the matter out of my mind over the past few weeks, but I must admit that it is not easy.” Additionally, Thierry Neuville has suggested he may consider a reduced competition schedule next season to regain motivation.
