Hyundai Glovis to study SMR-powered shipping with U.S. logistics firm

Hyundai Glovis has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Liberty Global Logistics (LGL) to jointly examine the commercial operation of Pure Car and Truck Carriers (PCTC) powered by Small Modular Reactors (SMR). The collaboration focuses on analyzing the feasibility of operating SMR-powered vessels on routes between South Korea and the United States.

Under the agreement, Hyundai Glovis will evaluate South Korean port characteristics, regulatory environments, and operational requirements, while LGL will review U.S. regulations and maritime environments. The two companies also intend to research ship development, construction possibilities, flag state registration, and commercialization strategies.

Utilizing SMR technology as a power source is expected to significantly reduce carbon emissions and allow for long-term operation without frequent refueling. Additionally, the technology could increase cargo efficiency by reducing the space required for traditional fuel tanks and exhaust systems. Hyundai Glovis previously received Approval in Principle (AiP) from Lloyd's Register for the conceptual design of an SMR-powered PCTC.
